Purpose of the Program

The US Department of Transportation Rural Opportunities to Use Transportation for Economic Success (R.O.U.T.E.S.) Initiative addresses disparities in rural transportation infrastructure in order to tangibly improve safety and economic competitiveness in all parts of the country.  To subscribe to R.O.U.T.E.S. updates, go to https://service.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDOT/subscriber/new?topic_id=USDOT_143

BUILD is a competitive grant program that funds capital investments in infrastructure projects across all modes. INFRA is a competitive grant program that funds capital investments in freight-specific megaprojects.  About $1 billion is available annually for both BUILD and INFRA.  Applications are made in cooperation with IDOT.  USDOT intends to award 50% of BUILD Transportation grant funding to projects located in rural areas that deliver positive benefits for these communities, consistent with the Department’s R.O.U.T.E.S. initiative.
