Purpose of the Program

IL Secure Choice is a retirement savings program specifically for workers and employers in Illinois who are not already offering their own qualified retirement plan. It allows workers to save their own money into their own Roth IRA with default savings options to make it easy to understand. Employees can make alternative selections if they choose or can opt-out of the program altogether. For employers, they are able to give their employees access to an important workplace benefit without have the cost, administration, or legal/fiduciary requirements of an employer-sponsored plan (such as a 401(k).

The program launched in late 2018 and so far has over 5,400 registered employers with over 67,000 savers. More information can be found at www.ilsecurechoice.com

Who is Eligible

Any workers with wages allocable to Illinois can enroll in the program (either through their employer or with self-enrollment). Employers with at least 25 employees that are not already offering their own retirement plan must register and facilitate the program on behalf of their employees.

Employers pay no cost to facilitate the program, are not charged any fees, do not make any contributions to their employees’ accounts and are not considered plan-sponsors or fiduciaries.

How Funds are to be used

Individuals save their own money into their own Roth IRA. All applicable federal and state guidelines for Roth IRAs apply.
