Purpose of the Program

Grants are awarded to help finance historic preservation plans and surveys, preservation outreach and education programs.  Grants are limited to governments which have received Certified Local Government (CLG) status from the National Park Service. Each application will be evaluated to determine its priority by the Agency staff, the state historic preservation officer, and the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council. Specific national preservation objectives are subject to change each year by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior. Projects are eligible for up to 60% reimbursement assistance. The Agency also provides advisory services to any local government for preparation of local preservation ordinances, design and establishment of local historic preservation programs, and economic development and tourism through historic preservation.
