Local Government Survey:

An Assessment of Technology and Community/Economic Development Issues

The goal of this statewide study is to get a better understanding of the current status of technology used by local governments and community/economic development issues in their community. The information collected will be used to develop programming to assist communities regionally and/or statewide for community and economic development purposes. The original study was mailed July 2009, which consisted of a survey sent to municipal and county-level officials in Illinois. The original research was funded through a grant the Western Illinois Regional Council (Macomb) received from the Economic Development Administration. The report shows the survey results submitted by August 27, 2009.

You and your colleagues are invited to participate in the research study. The survey is divided into three sections:

  • 1) Section 1 is for the local administrator or his/her designee;

  • 2) Section 2 is for the information technology professional within the unit of local government; and

  • 3) Section 3 is for the staff person that has Geographic Information Systems (GIS) responsibility for the unit of local government, if the services are provided in-house.

    • In some instances, the local administrator may be able to respond to all sections of this survey. In other instances, it may need to be passed to other employees to complete the technical section. In all cases, please feel free to consult with other staff members as you fill out the survey. Section 3 is only intended for units of local government that complete some or all their GIS work in-house. The survey should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete per section.

      If you have any questions, please contact the project manager, Lori Sutton at la-sutton@wiu.edu or (800) 526-9943.The survey results will be most useful if submitted by October 31, 2009. Contact information provided in survey will only be used for follow-up purposes. Only aggregate data will be reported in the resources created by this study. Individual responses are confidential and will not be identified.
