Karl Earl Mundt

Karl Earl Mundt (1900-1974) was a prominent farm-state Republican who served as a United States Representative and Senator for 34 years. In 1923, he graduated from Carleton College and four years later received his Master’s degree from Columbia University. After teaching high school in Madison, SD, he was elected to Congress as representative of South Dakota’s First District in 1938. He served as a senator from 1948 to 1973. Mundt was on several subcommittees of the Appropriations Committee including: Agriculture, Defense Department, Interior Department, and Public Works. He was a conservationist, as well as member of several organizations and societies.
