Sharon joined the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs in 2002. She received her B.A. in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse, and later lived overseas with her husband during his term of service in the U.S. Army. During their travels, Sharon had the opportunity to work in various fields including elementary education, secretarial, teen counseling, adult mentoring, professional sewing, and modeling. Before returning to the U.S. Sharon taught third grade for five years at an American elementary school in Wurzburg, Germany.
