Karen Peitzmeier joined the IIRA staff as Internal Coordinator for the Peace Corps Fellows Program on June 1, 2005. In May of 2000 she graduated from Oklahoma State University with a masters degree in Leisure Studies.
Employment Experience
Karen's primary emphasis has been training in wilderness and environmental education, therapeutic recreation and small group dynamics. Karen has been the Program Coordinator for Horn Field Campus of WIU for nine years there she conducted trainings for the Challenge Course program, developed community and university recreational programs and maintained the 92 acre site.
Karen has worked at the Charter North Psychiatric Hospital in Anchorage Alaska; there she assisted on the adolescent and adult units as a therapeutic recreation specialist and general aid. As an Assistant Supportive Scientist with WIU's Biology Department on Pool 26 of the Mississippi River, Karen was responsible for collecting water quality samples, recording data and maintenance of research boats and hover craft.
More recently Karen has served as an environmental education consultant to the Partners of America Illinois-Sao Paulo Brazil chapter. She also serves on the national board of directors for the Wilderness Education Association and holds the position of treasurer.
Responsibilities
As internal coordinator for the Peace Corps Fellows Program, Karen has management responsibilities with an emphasis on student recruitment, orientation, and training, as well as coordination of graduate assistantships.
